For an open-source alternative to Runway, separate video generation from editing. OpenShot and Kdenlive can assemble and edit footage; a downloadable video model supplies generation. Magic Hour is a hosted commercial platform with APIs, not an open-source desktop edition. Choose an open stack when deployment control is worth the hardware, setup, and maintenance work.

A practical local workflow
- Choose a video-model release whose license permits your intended use.
- Confirm that your hardware can run the specific model and settings.
- Generate a short representative clip and save the prompt and settings.
- Import the accepted result into your editor with your permitted music, narration, and graphics.
- Review continuity, timing, audio, and the final export.
For a product promo, generate a restrained shot from a product image you can use, then add exact product text and an end card in the editor. Keeping text in an editable layer makes corrections easier and avoids relying on generated lettering.
Open weights are not the same as unrestricted use
Read the license for the exact release. Code, weights, and third-party assets can have different terms. For example, LTX's model license includes a company-revenue threshold for its commercial license. Do not infer that a downloadable model is unrestricted or that an entire hosted service is open source.
Is the open-source route cheaper?
Software with no subscription can still require paid hardware or cloud compute, storage, installation work, and maintenance. Compare the cost of accepted outputs and your time. A local editor is often useful even if you choose a hosted generator for the generation step.
