Analytics tools for video and social content: choose by decision

Quick answer
Start with your publishing platform's native analytics to understand attention. Use YouTube Studio for YouTube retention, Metricool for reporting across social accounts, Wistia for hosted-video engagement, Google Analytics 4 for website acquisition and key events, or PostHog for product funnels and controlled onsite experiments. Choose the tool from the decision you need to make. Views, attributed conversions and experimentally measured lift answer different questions.
A report should change what you do next: revise an opening, clarify an offer, fix a landing-page problem or stop spending time on an unproductive format. Adding every available metric to a dashboard makes none of those decisions automatically.
This guide focuses on measuring finished content and its downstream results. It does not rank generators or claim that every analytics feature uses AI. If you need to produce the underlying assets, see our AI video tools for social media.
How we chose these tools
We reviewed official product, pricing and support documentation on October 27, 2026. These recommendations describe documented capabilities, not a hands-on accuracy benchmark. We did not run campaigns, compare tracking coverage or measure revenue lift.
The five selections cover different places where content is consumed: inside YouTube, across social accounts, in an embedded player, on a website and inside a product. They can complement each other, but a small team should add a tool only when it answers an unresolved question worth the setup and maintenance.
Magic Hour publishes this guide. It generates and transforms creative assets; it is not the analytics system of record for impressions, customer purchases or experiments. The measurement plan should exist before you generate more variants.
Choose by the decision
Decision | Start with | Evidence to inspect | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|---|
Where do viewers leave a YouTube video? | YouTube Studio | Video-level retention, traffic context and watch time | Why each individual left or whether a sale resulted |
Which social posts deserve a closer review? | Metricool | Account and post reporting across connected networks | A perfectly comparable cross-platform view or causal lift |
Does an embedded video hold attention? | Wistia | Plays, aggregate engagement, session heatmaps and player actions | All off-platform watching or every external form submission |
Which tagged campaigns bring people to my site? | Google Analytics 4 | Acquisition dimensions, events and key events | A complete identity trail for every social viewer |
Does an onsite video change improve conversion? | PostHog | Defined funnels, exposure records and experiment outcomes | Random assignment of an external social platform's audience |
Our starting recommendation is native analytics for the content itself, plus a verified website outcome when the campaign asks people to leave the platform. Add cross-network reporting, a specialist player or product experimentation when that specific need arises.
1. YouTube Studio: diagnose packaging and retention
Use YouTube Studio first when the decision concerns a YouTube upload. The audience-retention report shows which parts held attention and where viewers skipped or stopped. It is available at video level, and processing typically takes one to two days. Some highlighted moments require enough views and a sufficiently long video, so missing highlights are not proof that nothing happened. YouTube retention documentation
A spike needs interpretation. YouTube notes that rewatching can reflect either interest or confusion. A dip can reflect skipping or leaving. Watch the actual segment before deciding to copy a pattern or remove it. The graph gives you a place to investigate, not the viewer's stated reason.
For packaging, inspect thumbnail impressions alongside resulting views and watch time. Registered impressions have a specific visibility definition and do not include all possible exposure, such as external embeds and email notifications. A thumbnail click-through rate therefore has a narrower denominator than all times someone encountered the content. YouTube impressions and watch time
Illustrative decision: a tutorial spends too long introducing the host before showing the result. Retention identifies the opening as a candidate for review. Move the promised demonstration earlier in a future version, while keeping the topic and viewer promise clear. No improvement is established until suitable subsequent evidence exists.
Limit: comparing two uploads also compares their topics, audiences, distribution and timing. A better graph on the newer upload does not isolate the effect of one editing change.
2. Metricool: organize reporting across social accounts
Metricool is useful when the work is gathering reports from several connected brands or accounts. Its plan structure combines analytics with publishing, and paid tiers include reporting exports and longer analytics history. Starter lists PDF and PowerPoint reports; Advanced adds customizable report templates and a connector for reporting workflows. Metricool pricing
Check access before building a recurring scorecard. The Free plan includes one brand and thirty days of analytics, with no LinkedIn or X connection. Eligible paid plans have separate X and Advanced Analytics add-ons. Access to an add-on does not mean its full capabilities are included in the base subscription. Metricool plan and add-on details
Illustrative decision: a studio wants a weekly list of tutorials, product demonstrations and behind-the-scenes posts that merit discussion. A shared report can reduce the need to assemble that list manually. Keep each post's platform, format, publishing date and audience context beside its metrics.
The value of a combined dashboard is organization. It does not make Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube define views or engagement identically. Before adding metrics together, inspect the source definitions and confirm whether the report covers the required post type, historical period and paid or organic activity.
Limit: a post with more interactions may have reached a different audience or received paid support. Use it to select questions and content to inspect, then consult native analytics when a platform-specific detail could change the decision.
3. Wistia: understand videos hosted on your website
Wistia is relevant when the video sits inside a website experience, such as a product explanation, course preview or customer guide. Its media analytics documentation covers embedded locations, traffic, engagement and individual viewing-session heatmaps. That is a different job from reporting on every appearance of a file after it spreads across the internet. Wistia media analytics overview
The aggregate engagement graph and individual heatmaps serve different purposes. The graph shows collective viewing and replay patterns; heatmaps show individual sessions. Wistia also documents action metrics for elements such as calls to action. Its action conversion rate uses people who interacted with the action divided by people who viewed it. That is a player-action metric, not automatically your store's purchase conversion rate. Wistia engagement analytics
Illustrative decision: visitors play a product explanation but rarely reach a late call to action. Inspect whether the useful demonstration is delayed and whether the action is understandable outside the player. A shorter edit is a hypothesis; viewers who already intend to buy may behave differently from casual visitors.
Wistia also documents A/B testing of thumbnails, videos and video versions. If the comparison lives entirely in that player, inspect this option before adding a separate experimentation product. Confirm what the test measures and which plan includes it. Wistia's analytics features
Check the exact reporting scope. Wistia's media overview says its form-submission report covers Wistia Forms and excludes third-party forms such as HubSpot, Marketo and Pardot. Reconcile a lead in the system that actually receives it. Wistia reporting boundary
Limit: player activity does not reveal every later customer action. Confirm feature access, storage, bandwidth and integration requirements on the current Wistia plan page before making it part of a production workflow.

4. Google Analytics 4: connect content to website actions
Google Analytics 4, or GA4, is a useful starting point when the question is what happens after someone clicks through to your website. Its campaign documentation describes tagged links using source, medium and campaign, with utm_content available to distinguish creative versions. Consistent naming matters because differently spelled values can split reporting rows. Google campaign URL documentation
GA4 measures events, and you can mark an important event as a key event. A purchase, qualified form submission or another meaningful action still needs a correct implementation. Renaming a page view as an important event does not turn it into a sale. Google's event and key-event guide
Video measurement also has scope. Google's enhanced video-engagement measurement specifically covers YouTube embeds with JavaScript API support enabled. Do not assume turning on enhanced measurement tracks every Wistia player, uploaded MP4 or social feed view. Enhanced measurement documentation
Illustrative decision: two social clips use different creative identifiers in their destination links. GA4 helps inspect the arriving sessions and collected website outcomes. If a clip has many native views but few tagged visits, examine the call to action, available link placement and destination before declaring the video ineffective.
Limit: attribution assigns credit to touchpoints under a chosen model. It is useful for interpreting a journey but does not replace a controlled estimate of incremental results. Report the model and window alongside credited conversions. Google attribution documentation
5. PostHog: investigate funnels and controlled onsite changes
PostHog is relevant when you control the website or product and need to understand a sequence after arrival. Its funnel documentation lets you define steps, order, filters and a conversion window. It distinguishes overall conversion from conversion relative to the previous step, so the denominator should be explicit whenever you share a rate. PostHog funnels
The data must cover the full outcome window. PostHog's guide notes that the report date range applies to later steps too. A conversion outside the selected range can be excluded even if it happens within the configured conversion window. Recent entrants therefore need enough follow-up time before you compare their outcomes with older entrants.
For a controlled onsite comparison, PostHog Experiments uses variants, exposure tracking and statistical analysis. Its creation guide separates the hypothesis, rollout and measurement choices. Those are decisions the team must make; installing an analytics product does not design the experiment. PostHog Experiments, experiment setup
Illustrative decision: randomize eligible landing-page visitors between two approved explanatory-video versions and measure a predefined successful action. Keep the surrounding offer stable, verify which version was shown and allow the outcome window to complete.
Limit: this randomizes the experience you control. It does not randomly assign Instagram viewers to organic posts or establish which external clip caused their visit. Analytics events, feature-flag requests and replay recordings also have distinct usage allowances. Check PostHog pricing against the instrumentation you actually need.
Define the metric before comparing tools
Metric | What it answers | Denominator or boundary to record |
|---|---|---|
Thumbnail click-through rate | Did registered thumbnail exposure lead to a view? | The platform's counted thumbnail impressions |
Retention at a point | How much of the viewing audience remained at this moment? | The platform's retention definition and video length |
Player action rate | Did people who saw an in-player action use it? | People exposed to that action, according to the player |
Website conversion rate | Did eligible visitors complete the selected action? | Defined people or sessions, with a fixed window |
Cost per accepted asset | What did usable production cost? | Accepted finished assets, including rejected-work costs |
Cost per acquired customer | What did acquisition cost under the stated accounting rule? | Verified new paying customers, with included costs stated |
Avoid calling every rate engagement. A page visit, replay, saved post, lead and purchase represent different behavior. Select one primary outcome for the decision and use other metrics to explain it or detect harm.
If the business sells an annual service, a same-day page view is early evidence rather than a completed revenue outcome. If the video teaches an existing customer how to finish a task, successful completion may matter more than acquisition. Match the measurement to the actual job.
A practical review workflow
Consider a fictional two-person homeware shop with a care tutorial, a social teaser and a product page. The following workflow is illustrative and contains no measured results.
Define the decision. The team wants to know whether the tutorial helps shoppers understand a product well enough to make an informed purchase. It chooses a verified purchase as the business outcome and uses viewing behavior to diagnose the explanation.
Name the assets. Give the source video and each finished cut stable identifiers. Record the main promise, duration, opening, channel, posting time, destination and whether distribution is paid. Keep the actual approved files, because a title alone does not identify which edit ran.
Verify the path. Follow the teaser's link, confirm its campaign tags, play the embedded video and inspect a legitimate completed action in the destination's records. This verifies collection behavior. It does not establish campaign performance or require inventing customer purchases.
Read each layer separately. Native reporting describes the teaser audience. Player reporting describes people who play the website video. Website analytics describes recorded site activity. Purchase records establish paid orders. Those populations overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
Make one bounded decision. If the demonstration arrives late, inspect the edit and propose an earlier demonstration. If visitors never reach the product page, inspect the link and message first. If purchase collection is broken, repair the measurement before judging the creative.
Record the conclusion honestly. Use language such as "candidate opening to revise," "tagged visits recorded" or "purchase rate difference remains uncertain." Keep the existing version when the evidence cannot justify a change. Our guide to AI content and social-media measurement explains why production speed and business performance need separate evidence.
Separate observation from an experiment
Two posts published on different days are not a randomized test. They may differ in audience, topic, platform distribution, placement, spend and timing. A dashboard can expose that context; it cannot erase it.
When a causal decision matters and the surface permits controlled assignment, define the eligible population, variants, primary outcome and observation window before launch. Confirm exposure and identity, protect the outcome measurement and decide how uncertainty will affect the rollout. A low-volume result can remain inconclusive, even when one percentage looks larger.
Do not compare a mature cohort with people who have had only a few hours to buy. Wait until each included entrant has had the required opportunity to complete the outcome. Keep a record of missing events, excluded users and incomplete observation rather than reporting them as zero activity.
For a budget decision, include media spend, production, failed drafts, editing and analysis time. Attributed revenue can help allocate attention, but do not label it incremental profit. Costs, refunds and the relevant causal comparison belong in that calculation.
Where creative generation fits
When a finding calls for creative revision, turn it into a specific brief. "Show the care step sooner" is actionable. "Make the content more engaging" is not.
If the approved revision needs an illustrative supporting scene, Magic Hour Text-to-Video can generate a downloadable clip from a scene description. Review the complete export and keep the new version's identifier when uploading it to your player or publishing platform. This is an asset handoff, not an analytics integration or a claimed performance prediction.
Use real footage for product behavior that needs proof. For clickable elements, the hosting player owns the interaction; a generated MP4 does not become interactive by itself. Our interactive video marketing guide explains that production-to-player boundary.
Turn a measured question into a new creative brief
When your evidence supports a visual revision, create one candidate, review it and preserve its version before evaluating the outcome.
Create a video candidateFrequently asked questions
Start with the publishing platform's native analytics. Add verified website outcomes if the campaign asks viewers to leave the platform. Pay for another tool when a recurring reporting or measurement gap justifies it.
No. Event collection, retention graphs, reporting and experiments do not require an AI label. AI summaries may help explore data, but inspect their definitions and evidence before changing content or budget.
Keep platform definitions, format and time window beside each count. A reporting dashboard does not make the units identical. Compare patterns carefully and use a consistently defined downstream outcome when the business decision requires one.
No. Retention describes viewing behavior. Purchases depend on the audience, offer, destination and other factors. Measure the business outcome separately and use an appropriate controlled comparison when you need a causal claim.
No. It helps identify recorded referral traffic and attribution under your measurement setup. It does not measure every exposure or establish what the customer would have done without the video.
This guide makes no such claim. Use Magic Hour to create a reviewed asset from a concrete brief. Evaluate the accepted version through the publishing, player, website or experiment system that measures the relevant outcome.
