A composite is a single image assembled from more than one visual source. The sources can be separate photographs, generated elements, illustrations, textures, type or multiple frames from the same camera position. The result may look intentionally collaged or may aim to look like one photograph.

Adobe's current compositing tutorial demonstrates the core manual operations: place elements on separate layers, transform them, reveal or hide areas with masks, use blend modes and adjust color and light. Photoshop provides Auto-Align and Auto-Blend for overlapping frames, while Photopea's layer workflow provides a browser-based layered editor. Automatic alignment helps with images of the same scene; it does not solve mismatched perspective or lighting between unrelated sources.

2. AI prompt editing

How to make a composite image step by step

1. Define the final use. Set dimensions, aspect ratio, color profile, file format and whether the result is for web, print, advertising, editorial or internal concepting. The destination determines the resolution and review standard.

2. Choose the base image. The base establishes camera height, horizon, perspective, light direction, depth of field, grain and most of the final resolution. Choose it before hunting for extra elements.

3. Select compatible sources. Match focal length and viewing angle when possible. Avoid stretching a small object or forcing a top-down element into an eye-level scene.

4. Isolate the element. Use a mask or transparent cutout. Inspect hair, fur, glass, motion blur, thin straps and soft shadows at 100% zoom. Preserve a copy of the original selection.

5. Match perspective and scale. Align horizon and vanishing directions first. Use known objects, body proportions or environmental cues to set size. Do not rely on what looks plausible in a tiny preview.

6. Match focus and motion. Apply blur or sharpening so the inserted element belongs at the same depth. Match motion blur direction and amount when either the camera or subject is moving.

7. Rebuild light and shadow. Match the highlight side, shadow side, softness and color temperature. Add a contact shadow where an object touches a surface and an occlusion shadow where parts overlap.

8. Match color, grain and contrast. Make local corrections first, then apply a restrained global grade. Add grain only after scale and sharpness match; grain cannot hide a bad mask.

9. Inspect every boundary. Review at full size and at the actual publishing size. Check halos, repeated textures, transparent edges, reflected color, impossible overlap and accidental changes in text or identity.

10. Save source and export copies. Keep a layered master with masks and source attribution. Export a separate flattened file in the required color space and compression, then reopen the export to verify it.

  • Scale: relative size is supported by objects and scene depth.

  • Light: highlight direction, softness, color and exposure match.

  • Shadow: the element has plausible contact, cast and overlap shadows.

  • Focus: sharpness and depth of field fit the element's distance.

  • Edges: hair, fur, glass and motion blur blend without a bright halo.

  • Texture: noise, grain, compression and resolution feel consistent.

  • Reflection: shiny surfaces and nearby objects reflect the inserted element when required.

  • Meaning: the image does not falsely imply an event, endorsement or product capability.

When Auto-Align and Auto-Blend help

Photoshop Auto-Align finds shared content across separate layers so matching areas overlap. It is useful for group-photo repair, panoramas and frames captured from a similar viewpoint. Auto-Blend Layers can blend exposure or focus differences with masks.
