How to remove an image background on iPhone

Method 1: lift the subject in Photos

• Open the photo full screen. Use the original file when possible; compressed screenshots make hair and small edges harder to isolate.

• Touch and hold the subject. Release when a bright outline appears.

• Choose Copy or Share. Paste the cutout into a compatible document or send it to another app.

• Inspect the destination. Confirm that transparency is preserved and no white or black rectangle was added behind the subject.

Apple’s current photo-cutout instructions say the feature is available in iOS 16 and later on iPhone XS, iPhone XR and later. Apple also notes that the isolated subject cannot be pasted directly onto another photo from this flow; use an editing or layout app for a composite.

Method 2: remove the background in Preview

In the current Preview app, open the image, tap the More button, then choose Remove Background. Apple’s Preview instructions document this as a separate image-editing action. This is useful when the photo already lives in Files and you want an edited file rather than a copied subject.

If Preview or the option is unavailable on the device, use the Photos method or a browser tool. Do not rely on an old Files Quick Actions menu that is not present in the current iOS interface.

Method 3: use Magic Hour in Safari

Open Magic Hour Background Remover in Safari, upload the original image, select Remove Background and download the transparent result. The current page supports common iPhone image formats and processes one image at a time in the browser workflow.

Which iPhone method should you use?

• Fast copy or sticker: use Photos and touch-hold the subject.

• Edited file in the current iOS workflow: use Preview when Remove Background is available.

• Downloadable transparent PNG: use Magic Hour in Safari.

• Precise repair: move the cutout to an editor with masks or erasing controls when automatic isolation misses a necessary area.

• New background: remove the original first, then add the replacement in an editor; these are two different operations.

Check the cutout before saving

• Hair and fur: look for clipped strands, solid halos and background color caught between fine edges.

• Transparent and reflective objects: inspect glass, veils, smoke, glossy packaging and reflections against two background colors.

• Holes and gaps: check handles, fingers, spokes, jewelry and spaces inside letters or product parts.

• Edge color: place the cutout on both light and dark backgrounds to reveal white or dark fringes.

• Product truth: confirm labels, shape, color and accessories remain unchanged.

• Output format: use a format that preserves transparency; JPEG does not.

Fix common failures

The subject is clipped. Return to the original and try a clearer, higher-contrast image. If the missing area matters, repair the mask manually instead of enlarging a damaged cutout.

There is a colored halo. Inspect at the final size and use an editor to refine or defringe the edge. Changing the replacement background can hide a small halo, but it does not repair the source asset.

The file has a solid background. The receiving app or export may have flattened transparency. Reopen the original transparent output in an app that supports alpha and export PNG or another transparency-capable format.
