How to use Sora projects: saved videos and migration

1. Check export access or use your saved archive

OpenAI's help page describes an export route at Sora's official sunset page for the account that used Sora. Sign in and check whether Export is still available. If it is, request the archive, wait for the readiness email, then download and verify the expected outputs. If export is no longer available, use videos and archives you previously downloaded; do not assume deleted files can be recovered. OpenAI says associated Sora data will be permanently deleted after discontinuation and any final export window.

2. Preserve the project, not only the output

Save the final video together with its prompt, source images or clips, aspect ratio, duration, audio requirements, selected variations and editing notes. Record what made the chosen output acceptable. A finished MP4 cannot tell a replacement model which subject, camera move, timing or continuity detail mattered most.

3. Inventory any API dependency

List every application, automation or internal tool that still calls the Sora API. Record authentication, endpoint and model names, request fields, upload formats, job states, polling or webhook behavior, output retrieval, retention assumptions, error handling and downstream processing. OpenAI's published September 24, 2026 discontinuation deadline has passed. Check whether any callers still depend on the former API and verify their current status in your own integration before migrating them; do not assume historical access continues.

4. Define one portable test shot

Rewrite one Sora project as a provider-neutral brief: subject, action, camera, setting, duration, aspect ratio and desired sound. Example: “Five-second medium shot of a cyclist stopping beside a café, static camera, soft morning light, consistent bicycle and clothing.” This is an evaluation prompt, not a result we claim to have tested.

5. Choose the correct replacement input

Use text-to-video when the scene starts from a description. Use image-to-video when a reference image should anchor the subject or first frame. If the job modifies existing footage, choose a tool that explicitly supports the required editing operation. Do not assume every model accepts Sora's inputs or prompt syntax.

6. Compare complete results

Inspect the full clip for subject and object consistency, camera behavior, motion, text, dialogue, synchronization and visual continuity. Record every attempt, failure and correction needed to approve one output. Compare accepted-output cost and time; the lowest listed price per generation can be the more expensive workflow when it requires more retries.

7. Migrate gradually

Recreate a small representative set before switching production traffic. Keep the source assets and expected outputs available for comparison. Update the integration, observability and failure handling around the new provider rather than only changing a model name. Another asynchronous video API is not necessarily a drop-in Sora replacement.

What should you do with old Sora tutorials?

Treat invite codes, app signup steps, Storyboard screenshots, Remix instructions and historical Plus or Pro allowances as documentation of a discontinued product.
